SUVs offer additional storage options compared with standard vehicles. Additional racks and roomier interiors can fit additional passengers and items more comfortably. In addition to having more room on the inside, most SUVs feature a luggage rack on the roof, which allows you to have more room in the interior for your travels.

Measure the size of box or bag you will need to put on the top of the vehicle. For cross-bar luggage racks, you will need to fit the box or bag within the square that the cross and sidebars form. For luggage racks without a cross bar, be sure the carrier does not hang over the windshield.

Use a durable and weatherproof cargo bag or box to store your items. When choosing a bag or box, keep in mind that your personal items will be riding on the top in rain and other weather conditions at a minimum speed of 55 to 60 mph.

Place the cargo bag or box on top of the SUV first and then pack your items in it to prevent neck and back injuries that can result from trying to lift a loaded carrier onto the car.

Fill the bag or box completely to prevent flapping once the vehicle starts moving. Avoid packing items on the top that you will need to access quickly.

Close the box or bag securely and attach it to the luggage rack using cam-buckle straps. Hook the snaps onto the rack and crank the cam-buckle to tighten the straps. Use at least four straps over the box or bag with two straps extending from front to back and two extending over the sides.
