Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Hilo HI Scenic Drive

Preview: This is probably among the most active volcanic areas in the world. Here, you will not find the explosive, highly destructive type of volcano, but a more gently flowing lava that slowly builds up into relatively shallow craters known as calderas. Because of the type of volcanic activity here, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has sometimes been referred to as the Drive-In Volcano. Don’t let that nickname fool you. Its power is still awesome and there are occasions where sections of the park must be closed because of recurring volcanic activity. Some local residents can tell you how this gentle volcano has swallowed up their homes. Most likely on your visit you will see only steam escaping from vents in the crater and, of course, evidence of past eruptions. But that alone is worth the visit, for the park is a highly unusual experience. The crater itself and past lava flows are both educational and impressive. It is a strange, eerie place. This chapter explains in detail how to tour the park. In addition to a park map the details include driving tours, outdoor recreation, accommodations, campgrounds, dining, and more.

Review: My experience in Hawaii Volcanos National Park was unbelievable. I guess I didn’t expect the park to offer so much. We drove the park loop and stopped at several trails along the way. One went to the edge of an old crater and one dropped into a damp mossy lava tube. There are many trails in the park to explore. Then we drove down to the end of the road at the ocean shoreline. Here you can get out and actually walk on the black pillowy lava fields. There are signs to keep you away from the current lava flows, but you can see the red lava sometimes, and you can always see the steam where it flows into the Pacific. This book chapter explains the park’s natural amenities in detail and will help you enjoy your trip. We really noticed the tourist traffic picking up during the day, so plan your visit wisely and go right when the park opens.
