Preview: You have decided to take a romantic weekend holiday. Where will you go? Perhaps you have been trying to choose between one of the delightful year-round resorts and a lakeside retreat. In the far western portion of Maryland, there is a place that offers the best of both options – Deep Creek Lake. Admittedly, though, it isn’t the easiest place to reach, but few will be disappointed by the destination. What you’ll find is Maryland’s largest fresh water lake – man-made, at that. A full 12 miles long, the lake covers over 3,900 acres and has 65 miles of shoreline. So far, it hasn’t been over-developed. With wood-siding covering the cabins, the eateries, and the boat houses, Deep Creek has the woodsy feel of a lake town, but with a touch of cosmopolitan. The constant new construction of upper end homes and the prices of food and cabin rental during high season is a reminder that this is no back woods community. The lake is big and beautiful with trees flanking it on most banks. Many accomodations are waterside, but don't count out those across the two-lane highway. Deep Creek is a very pedestrian friendly area with the lake and other amenities within a few yards walking distance.
