Preview: Whether you see it spread out below you from the dizzying height of one of its inclines, or from the Gateway Clipper, rising from the merging waters of the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers, Pittsburgh is a sight filled with surprises! In November 2004, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh opened its newly expanded headquarters. Filled with delightful interactive sculptures and new exhibits, the treasure of the museum is still its re-created set of the television show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Also in 2004, the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center opened its new five-story wing, solidifying its affiliation with Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian Institution. This exciting new wing hosts Smithsonian exhibitions, as well as the new Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, where you can see such classic artifacts as Satchel Paige’s baseball glove and the shoes Franco Harris was wearing when he caught the “Immaculate Reception.” The Phipps Conservatory plans to open its $36.6 million expansion in 2005, offering a tropical forest conservatory, new state-of-the-art greenhouses, and a new welcome center. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, named by the Discovery Channel and Forbes as one of the best places in the world to see dinosaurs, will become even better when it opens its expanded Dinosaur Hall in 2007. Thanks to Andrew Carnegie and the museums he helped to create, your trip to Pittsburgh can include not only dinosaur bones but paintings, sculpture, history, and more. In fall 2007, the African American Cultural Center of Greater Pittsburgh expects to open its new museum at Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, featuring galleries, classrooms, a theater with 400-plus seats, a gift shop, a cafe, and, many multipurpose spaces to be used for visual and performing art and expression. Also coming soon is SouthSide Works, an entertainment complex on the banks of the Monongahela. The above description is an excerpt from "Fun With the Family in Pennsylvania."
