Preview: Originally founded at Cape Porpoise in the 1600s, Kennebunk once supported a thriving fishing and shipbuilding industry. Today, period homes grace the town’s historic district, a lasting tribute to the wealth and craft of that time. Take a tour of the Storer House, birthplace of author Kenneth Roberts. Snap a picture of the “Wedding Cake House,” a private residence off Route 35. Shopping along Main Street, you’re bound to find something to take home. The Lafayette Center, a converted shoe factory, houses upscale shops. The Brick Store Exchange showcases locally crafted items. You’ll also discover antiques shops and art galleries in abundance. A small New England town, Kennebunkport is best known as the summer home of former president George Bush. He often vacationed here during his time in the White House— both as vice-president and president. His son, President George W. Bush, spent many summers here as well. Built in 1903, by George W.’s great-grandfather, George Herbert Walker, the Bush estate is at Walker’s Point off Ocean Avenue. Surrounded by water on three sides, the home is still clearly visible from designated pull-offs along the avenue and perfectly positioned for picture taking. Dock Square is the hot spot of Kennebunkport. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington used to spend his summers here writing. Tarkington and others have written books about this lively slice of Maine, and to this day, people come from all around to celebrate summer at Dock Square. The above description is an excerpt from "Fun With the Family in Maine." Whether you're a first-time visitor or a long-time local resident, this chapter from the Fun With the Family Series will help you find fun and engaging activities that the entire family can enjoy at great destinations throughout the state, suitable for “kids” of all ages.
