Preview: That’s just the war I’m talking about: a quick dip into George Washington and the Revolutionary War before settling into a weekend with the Du Pont legacy in magnificent mansions and even more magnificent gardens. The Du Ponts tended to have an excellent aesthetic sense, especially with gardens, sometimes to—shall we say?—eccentric extremes. Or let’s call them visionary, creating plantings that are works of art. This is horse country, and you’ll see plenty of rolling fields and horse farms. It’s also a hotbed of great golf and the nation’s Mushroom Capital: one-fourth of the U.S. supply of fresh mushrooms comes from this little corner of Pennsylvania. There’s a nice ecological balance here (not to mention an abundance of mushrooms in local cooking). The horses produce the, um, growing medium for all those mushrooms, which transform the stuff into the perfect fertilizer for keeping all those golf courses so perfectly green and all those gardens glowing with color. It’s a bit pricey here, and more elegant than most weekend trips I’ve suggested. Figure a country-club look, and pack a jacket for dinner. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
