Preview: It’s no surprise that Bayfield, Wisconsin, was named the “Best Little Town in the Midwest” by the
Chicago Tribune. Bayfield is about as close as we come in this region to an eastern seaboard village. The town sits on a hill that gently rolls toward the shore of Lake Superior, and most of the homes and buildings have clapboard siding and come in assorted blues, yellows, and pinks. So it even looks friendly. There is a special charm to the windswept look of the shorefront buildings of not only Bayfield but also La Pointe on Madeline Island. It means hard work, endurance, and pride. And Bayfield feels like a secret: The secret you want to tell the world, but keep to yourself forever. This kind of secret makes Bayfield’s restaurants and lodgings hard to get into, yet keeps it quaint. Along with Bayfield comes access to Madeline and about twenty other islands that make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This is boat country: Whether you sail or ride on the ferry or just encounter boat relics in the antiques stores, they are a constant part of the great lake’s scenery. Highlights include: water sports, ferry rides, and lighthouses. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
