Preview: If a trip to the Netherlands is beyond your travel budget this year, you can still enjoy a touch of Dutch in Holland, Michigan. Nestled in the state’s tulip country, the village is full of nostalgia for the Old World, with wooden-shoe dancers, authentic windmills, and other Dutch treats. Many people head for Holland in May (reason enough, for some, to go at other times), when the annual Tulip Time Festival is in full bloom. At that time, downtown’s scrubbed streets are full of flowers, costumed klompen dancers, local bands, parades, and thousands of tourists. There’s even an inspector —called the burgemeister—to make sure everything is in top shape. If Holland’s amusement-park quality wears thin or you start longing for all-American attractions, head for Grand Haven, about 20 miles north, which has a great lakefront and a new 3-mile boardwalk. Together, the two cities make a great quick getaway. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
