Boulder: Mecca for Bicyclists and Tea Lovers - Boulder CO Weekend Getaway

Preview: Politically and environmentally correct, hip, progressive, diverse, offbeat, alternative, and most of all outdoorsy, Boulder is where Birkenstocks, bicycles, and good vibes rule. Spend some time strolling the wonderfully eclectic outdoor Pearl Street Mall and you’re likely to see a grunge-clad performer crooning a 1970s tune or a guy dressed in a Dr. Seuss costume strolling the mall. Geographically, the striking red sandstone slabs that form the backdrop of Boulder, along with the pine-covered foothills that surround this town, make for a positively stunning setting. With nearly 100 miles of hiking trails practically right in their backyard, it’s no wonder that Boulderites are smitten by the great outdoors. Biking is big business in Boulder, and it’s safe to say that the majority of residents own at least one bicycle. Home to the University of Colorado, Boulder has that academic and youthful spirit unique to college towns. Mo Siegel, founder of Celestial Seasonings, the nation’s largest herb-tea manufacturer, is known as the local youth-turned-millionaire. Located outside Boulder on Sleepytime Drive, Celestial Seasonings offers tours of its facility. Whether people-watching on the mall or hiking the trails of historic Chautauqua Park, you’ll no doubt absorb the good karma of this wonderfully with-it city. Highlights include: an outdoor walking mall, the University of Colorado, a western art gallery, the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, a historic park, and a summer Shakespeare Festival. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.

Review: Boulder is a great place to visit if you love the outdoors. The town is the home of the University of Colorado, so it has a young, hip, outdoorsy vibe. The town has plenty of place to eat and drink, including some great brew pubs. For exercise and nature lovers, check out the nearby Walker Ranch park. It is a great place to trail run, mountain bike or just walk. On the way up, there is a great viewpoint of Boulder and the surrounding area.
