Oklahoma's Kiamichi Country: Ouachita National Forest, Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow Lake, Talimena Scenic Drive - Broken Bow OK Weekend Getaway

Preview: The lush, southeastern corner of Oklahoma is nothing short of stunning. The Ouachita (pronounced WASH-ee-taw) Mountains, which rise and fall dramatically along the lower reaches of the Oklahoma-Arkansas line, are densely covered with the oldest short-leaf pine forest in the world, as well as with heavy populations of oak and hickory. Unlike most American ranges, the mountains run east and west, rather than north and south. Coursing through these rugged ranges are the beautiful Little, Mountain Fork, Upper Kiamichi, and Poteau Rivers. Punctuating the stretch of Kiamichi Mountains that link the two sections of Ouachita National Forest in this region are thickly wooded state parks with an amazing array of recreational offerings. A forest heritage center and golf course Lake Beavers Bend resort Park the state’s most visited park, and McCurtain County Wilderness Area is a great find for hikers and bird-watchers. At the edge of the Kiamichis is the capital of the Choctaw Nation, the first of the Southeastern tribes to be forcibly removed to Oklahoma in the early 1800s. For the most ambitious wanderers, there’s a most unusual find—large runestones believed to have been carved by Vikings. This escape is about pure outdoors fun and soul enrichment. If you want bright lights, TV, and nightclubs, you won’t find them here. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.

Review: We were at Beaver's Bend State Park and the trails through there were great! The trees are full of color now and the weather was just perfect for some hiking. There were several campers this weekend; we just got lucky and were able to get a cabin nearby.
