Preview: Leaving concrete, expressways, and prairie behind, escapists looking for some watery adventures can find them on the Red River. Driving less than ninety minutes, travelers from the Metroplex find loads of recreation at massive Lake Texoma, created by damming the historic river that acts as a boundary between Texas and Oklahoma. Retreat to a lovely
resort, a simple fishing cabin, or a houseboat. Smaller and a bit more remote, Lake Murray is a woodsy sanctuary, also rich in recreation possibilities. North Texans who haven’t ventured this way are amazed at Lake Murray’s pretty setting and depth of offerings. Indeed across the Red River in Oklahoma await many pleasant, outdoorsy surprises, primarily in the form of a low granite range called the Arbuckle Mountains. Scientists have termed the area one of three geological windows into the past, placing it in league with the Grand Canyon of Arizona and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Scattered around the 300-million-year-old uplift are an abundance of trees, streams, and lakes that defy the Sooner State’s prairie–Dust Bowl image. Also in this direction are some antiques shops and an animal wonderland. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
