A Grand Island City: Galveston - Galveston TX Weekend Getaway

Preview: In its heyday, during the mid-nineteenth century, Galveston was called the Wall Street of the Southwest. Cotton was king, and this was a tremendously wealthy city. Prospering on the Gulf of Mexico, as did New Orleans, Galveston ruled this part of the coast for many years, until a ship channel to Houston was cut at the turn of the twentieth century. Today Galveston, home to about 65,000 residents, is filled with wonderful vestiges of its Victorian past. Get away from home and delve into a rich history of Italianate mansions and gingerbread houses, and see how miraculously the city rebuilt after the devastating hurricane of 1900. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.

Review: The Galveston beach front is GREAT! The weather was outstanding the weekend we were in Houston, so we decided to head over to Galveston to check out the water. There were TONS of people along the beach playing frisbee, sun tanning, and catching blue crabs. We had great seafood at Clary's and later at Gaidos. The Seawall is really neat with the murals all along the waterfront. Galveston is a great city!
