Preview: Saugatuck’s name has been linked with painters and sculptors since 1910, when the Art Institute of
Chicago opened an artists’ camp there. Creative types were drawn by the same balmy breezes, untamed marshes, and slightly bohemian atmosphere that attract tourists today. To truly savor the area’s unspoiled beauty, consider off-season. As in Lake Geneva and Door County, the crowds can make you think you never left the city. Off-season does not mean dead of winter, however. Mid-September can be early enough. One word of caution: Saugatuck can be a very tough place in which to find lodging, so book reservations well in advance. Also, more accommodations are available in Holland, just fifteen minutes away. Highlights include: Ferry rides, galleries, boating, shopping, fishing, and golf. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.
