Starved Rock State Park: Take a Hike - Utica IL Weekend Getaway

Preview: Starved Rock, one of the state’s most popular attractions, now includes a complex that could compete with some of the best luxury resorts from Lake Geneva to Upper Michigan, and at a fraction of the price. Swimming is no longer relegated to some slippery riverbank; the lodge’s new wing, completed in 1989, offers an Olympic-size pool, flanked by whirlpool, sauna, and kiddie pool. Thirty new rooms have been added, too, along with cable TV. But the face-lift has not altered Starved Rock’s rustic charm, which has been in place since the Civilian Conservation Corps built the lodge back in the 1930s. Douglas fir logs (some nearly 3 feet in diameter) and a 700-ton double fireplace still dominate the Great Room, where it seems downright quaint to see families playing board games. (It doesn’t take kids too long, however, to discover the video games on the second floor.) Another big factor in Starved Rock’s favor is its proximity. Located on the Illinois River, the park is a mere 95 miles southwest of Chicago. You can leave downtown at five on a Friday afternoon and easily make dinner at seven. Because it is so close, it also makes a very nice day-long excursion. Highlights include: Cycling, winter sports, hiking, camping bird-watching, and fall foliage. The detailed itinerary in this chapter is a driving tour that features extensive recommendations for sightseeing attractions, recreational activities, lodging, restaurants, shopping, and more.

Review: "the rock" as it is locally called is a great place to hike for a couple of days. wonderful views of the Illinois River valley and trails varrying from river walks to canyons to deep woods. if planning on going exit off of I-80 on Exit 90 and take 23 south to IL 71 just south of the Illinois. this 10 mi. drive along the river is great with winding turns through the gorges as you enter the park. do not miss nearby Mathiesen State Park while in the area. it's trails are worth the 3 minutes drive from the Starved Rock Lodge.
