Cornwall Bridge, Cornwall, West Cornwall & Sharon, CT - Cornwall CT Weekend Getaway

Preview: Cornwall Bridge has its own story to tell. If you stay long enough, you will undoubtedly hear some speculation over Dudleytown. As one of the few ghost towns left in Connecticut, its legends linger on. The town, built on a plateau above the Housatonic River near Cornwall Bridge, was founded in 1747 and populated until 1900. Today only parts of collapsed stone walls, foundations, and wells remain. Life in Dudleytown was never easy. The mountains surrounding the village kept the sunlight out, so the land couldn’t be farmed effectively. Instead, villagers depended on producing charcoal for their livelihood. And there is the legend of the Dudleytown Curse, with odd happenings and bizarre deaths as proof. In Cornwall you can visit the forest of Cathedral Pines, the farming village of Goshen, and Mohawk Mountain State Park with the scenic Mattatuck Trail. In West Cornwall, you'll drive through (and photograph) an award winning covered bridge, and finally, in Sharon you can spend the day walking the grounds of the Sharon Audubon Center and walking the streets to view elegant old estates and mansions. This chapter contains everything you need to getaway for a quick daytrip or a long weekend jaunt. A route map is included and as are suggestions for the best things to do, places to eat, and places to stay.
