Preview: The growth of the
Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs has been phenomenal. The high standard of living, good schools, and other amenities are a draw, along with popular parks and wildlife areas that bring people from around the region to this part of town. Located 53 miles east of Kansas City, Concordia is a sleepy little hamlet most of the time. Every September the town comes alive when it hosts a three-day celebration of its German heritage, complete with German brass bands, parades, cattle shows, and arts and crafts, along with plenty of German-style foods and imported German beers. Tourists come from around the state, swelling the population from 2,000 to as many as 5,000 in a single evening. This chapter from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Kansas City. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
