Preview: They do things in a big away in Texas, and the Texas Motor Speedway is a shining example. Here are a couple of the startling statistics about the largest sporting complex west of the Mississippi River: There are 1,633 rest room stalls just for women at the track and enough seats to fill Texas Stadium, home of the
Dallas Cowboys, nearly two-and-a-half times. This place is located between Dallas and Fort Worth, and it’s had its share of problems. But to its credit, the speedway has reacted quickly to criticism with solutions, not excuses. When drivers said the transition from the fourth turn to the front straightaway was too severe, they dug it up and rebuilt it. A year later, when water seeped under the pavement in the second turn, they installed a new drainage system. And while the track’s only been open for business since 1997, the asphalt’s already been replaced. Every seat here has been sold out for every Nextel Cup Series race—all more than six months in advance. The sport is wildly popular in Texas—so much so that two local fans filed a lawsuit in 2002 to force NASCAR to bring a second racing date to the Texas Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton won the inaugural race in 1997, but no winning driver has been able to repeat in the speedway’s first seven years. This chapter describes the track in detail and helps you plan your trip. Details are provided on when to go and how to get there, in addition to where to eat, where to stay, and which local tourist and recreation destinations to see while on vacation.
