Preview: In a 1913 newspaper article, visitors to the Browns Point Lighthouse were quoted as telling the keeper “what a great summer home” the lighthouse would make. The visitors were clearly taken by the pastoral setting and the ninety-degree views of the Puget Sound offered at the lighthouse. The keeper told the reporter “his life is not the summer vacation some persons think it is.” Today the Browns Point Lighthouse invites guests to experience the beauty and serenity of being a lighthouse keeper, without quite as much work and time commitment. Guests become lighthouse keepers for a one-week tour of duty when they stay in the keeper’s cottage. Duties include such things as conducting tours of the lighthouse grounds and facilities, doing light daily maintenance, and raising the flag each morning. Browns Point is a ten-minute drive from Tacoma and a thirty-minute drive from
Seattle. The community of Browns Point has a grocery store, an espresso shop, a pizza shop, a hardware store, a small shopping center, and several restaurants. Visitors to Browns Point Lighthouse can explore the pastoral beauty and natural wonders of Puget Sound. Wedged between the foothills of two great mountain ranges, Puget Sound extends 80 miles from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Olympia. It reaches depths of 900 feet and is an important transportation hub for Washington’s lumber industry. Reservations: Accepted by phone or mail. You must complete a reservation and membership application and pay all fees at least sixty days prior to your date of arrival.
