Washington, D.C. - Washington DC Family Vacation

Preview: In Washington, D.C., prepare to have fun and to feel proud, as our nation’s capital is a city that belongs to all Americans. Even after more than 200 years, the city of Washington still sparkles. Pierre L’Enfant, the French architect who planned this city of wide avenues and open spaces, paved the way for a city of heroic proportions. Spring is an especially good time to visit the nation’s capital, for the city blooms with tulips and azaleas, and with any luck, you might catch the famous cherry blossoms. An autumn stroll through Rock Creek Park serves as a wonderful respite to life in the fast lane. Winter in Washington is lots of fun, too. After touring many of the museums’ special exhibits, take the whole family ice skating on the Mall. And summer can be fun, but it’s hot and humid. A plus for families any time of the year: Many of Washington, D.C.’s attractions—including all the Smithsonian museums, the memorials, the White House, and the Capitol—are free. This chapter is one complete vacation written with families in mind. It’s loaded with exciting things to do, family-friendly places to lodge and dine, recommended side trips, local sources of information, and detailed travel directions.

Review: We had a nice family getaway to Washington DC. We visited most of the Mall Area, as well as Arlington National Cemetery and Mount Vernon. The highlight was probably the tour of the Gardens at the White House. We lucked into this as it is only offered four times a year, and we did not know about it in advance. We used Tourmobile as our means of transportation in and around Washington, parking daily at Arlington. We stayed at a nice Residence Inn in Woodbridge Virginia, about 20 miles south of the Capital off of I-95. We found this to be convenient for our Sunday morning trip to Mount Vernon. Our six-year old daughter enjoyed the Smithsonian, and the hands on Science experiments at American History. She also liked the kids tent at Mount Vernon.
