Sandusky and the Lake Erie Islands, OH - Sandusky OH Family Vacation

Preview: Often dubbed “Ohio’s summer playground,” Sandusky and the Lake Erie Islands offer lots of family finds. Sandusky has miles of lake shoreline for boating and bathing, plus an old-fashioned amusement park with up-to-speed roller coasters. For island fun Great Lakes–style, visit the Lake Erie Islands, especially Kelleys Island, and South Bass Island famed for Put-in-Bay. These islands gained significance in 1813 as the site of Commodore Perry’s victory over the British in the War of 1812. But now the islands offer much more placid pleasures such as sunning, swimming, fishing, and bicycling, all at affordable prices. This chapter is one complete vacation written with families in mind. It’s loaded with exciting things to do, family-friendly places to lodge and dine, recommended side trips, local sources of information, and detailed travel directions.

Review: Put-in-Bay is great for a day trip with the family. Take the walk-on ferry across the lake. The salt-water taffy is a yummy treat, or you can find many local restaurants and icecream shops. There's an underground tour of the caves that's not to be missed. In Sandusky, visit Cedar Point for the big rollercoasters and Soak City for the water rides on a hot day. Visit the nearby Geauga Lake for a family-friendly, less intense rollercoaster experience.
