Arcata and Trinidad - Arcata CA Weekend Getaway

Preview: Arcata began in the early 1850s as a supply depot for the gold mines in the Trinity Mountains. It was the county’s first seat of government, a post Eureka took over in 1856. As mining activity decreased, agriculture and logging gained importance in and near Arcata. Like its neighbor across the bay, Arcata has dozens of Victorian houses, mansions, and other structures, many of which are well preserved and lovingly cared for. The downtown area is built around a plaza. In the hills above downtown is the campus of Humboldt State University. Every town with an eye on tourism claims to be a county’s, region’s, or state’s “best-kept secret.” The phrase is so often used it’s a cliché and so often abused it’s usually a lie. But it might just fit Trinidad, a tiny town and teacup harbor just far enough north of San Francisco and south of Portland that most people “driving the Pacific Coast” seem to drive right by. Don’t make the same mistake. Take the Trinidad exit and visit the spotless town and nearby beaches and headlands. Fish out of the harbor aboard your own boat or one of the charter craft. Stay at one of the beautiful bed-and-breakfast inns or bargain-priced motels. If you’re camping, pitch a tent or plug in the RV at one of several campgrounds and RV parks. This chapter includes information on lodging, campgrounds, RV parks, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor activities near these coastal cities.
