Preview: Sails and sailors are the main attraction in “Crabtown.” However, even before the tony yacht clubs and the
United States Naval Academy were built, Annapolis assured its spot in early-American history by serving as the nation’s first peacetime capital (1783 –84). The city’s considerable colonial and early republican heritage is largely intact and, because it’s all within walking distance, highly accessible. Annapolis has one of the highest concentrations of 18th-century buildings in the nation, including more than 50 that predate the Revolutionary War. Maryland is the only state in which the homes of all its signers of the Declaration of Independence still exist — they’re all in Annapolis. You can tour three of the four — the homes of Charles Carroll, Samuel Chase, and William Paca. This chapter covers a complete weekend getaway. Inside you'll find information on what to see and do, tours, sports, shopping, local events, lodging, dining, and essential
travel information.
