Preview: Although many Chicagoans are familiar with wineries in southwest Michigan, fewer have ventured farther north, where Traverse City branches upward into the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas. That’s where the streetlights end and the countryside begins and you can drive for a dozen miles and see nothing but rolling land and an occasional sign enticing you with “Country Bread and Pastries” or “Farm-Fresh Fruit.” As you make the six-hour-plus drive here, billboards and fast-food chains give way to the rolling hills of northern Michigan. In autumn, the hills are rich with shades of red and gold. In winter, they sparkle with white blankets of snow and bundled-up kids on toboggans. In spring, the farms come to life with grazing cows and sheep and farmers tending their crops. In summer, the grapes ripen on the vines. By the following spring the best of the grapes will have been nurtured, harvested, and crafted into bottles of excellent wines that are ripe for the tasting in 39 wineries throughout the state. This chapter covers a complete weekend getaway. Inside you'll find information on what to see and do, tours, sports, shopping, local events, lodging, dining, and essential
