Preview: Clinging to the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, the quiet towns of Fairhope and Point Clear have restored clapboard houses with wide porches overlooking the bay and live oak trees cloaked with Spanish moss. Fairhope was settled around 1900 by a group of Midwesterners, who established it as a utopian single-tax community (the system is still in use). Today Fairhope’s streets are lined with seasonal flowers year-round—even the trash receptacles double as planters— and the downtown area has antiques shops, funky stores, art galleries, and B&Bs, making it a relaxing weekend escape. The Fairhope Municipal Pier, the centerpiece of town, offers fishing, boating, and marine services. Fairhope’s Arts and Crafts Festival, held each March, is a large juried show that draws more than 200 exhibitors for a weekend. Point Clear’s incomparable Grand Hotel, operating since 1847, is a leading
resort destination hidden away among million-dollar bayside estates. A walk along the hotel’s boardwalk provides a glimpse of the summer homes that line Mobile Bay. This chapter helps you plan a getaway in the Gulf Coast region. Inside you'll find information on what to see and do, dining, lodging, and how to get there.
