Preview: Wisconsin’s portion of the Great River Road is the focus of this drive, which takes you along the state’s western border, past bluffs and river towns along the Mississippi. The river here is part of the 360-mi.-long Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge and hosts impressive fall and spring bird migrations. Just follow the white-and-green “Wisconsin’s Great River Road ” signs. By mid-May, attractions are open and the hills are lush green. Summer by the river is warm and languid. The richness of fall colors is matched only by the array of waterfowl on the river. Donning skis or snowshoes is a good way to explore this bluff country in winter, though some attractions are closed. This chapter provides a complete driving itinerary with detailed directions, a route map, and what to see, where to eat, and where to stay at each destination along the way.
