Great River Road Part II: La Crosse to Dickeyville - Prairie du Chien WI Scenic Drive

Preview: This 120-mile drive follows the Mississippi River from La Crosse to Dickeyville, rolling past magnificent river bluffs and corn-filled upland prairies. Much of the length of the river along this drive is protected as the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The refuge includes 200,000 acres of riverbottom land (from Wabasha, Minnesota, to Rock Island, Illinois) set aside to protect migratory birds and native wildlife. Eagles and osprey soar above the bluffs, and all manner of wild critters frolic in the many parks and preserves along the way. Special attractions: Blackhawk Recreation Area, Wyalusing State Park, Nelson Dewey State Park, St. John Lead Mine, Dickeyville Grotto, camping, hiking, biking, fishing, wildlife watching. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
