Preview: A 124-mile drive, mostly on paved roads, with short stretches of good gravel road. The route follows closely the forested shores of Payette Lake before heading south through pastoral Long Valley, past Cascade Reservoir, and over Big Creek Summit to Warm Lake. The return to McCall takes visitors through another portion of Long Valley, past a number of historic buildings, including a pair of old churches. Special attractions: McCall, a pleasant tourist town on the shore of Payette Lake; scenic views of the lake from the shoreline drive; a short interpretive walk through a marsh popular with wildlife; a visit to Ponderosa State Park; the rare opportunity to spot a sea serpent; the small town of Cascade and Cascade Reservoir; ospreys nesting on power poles along the road; the possibility of seeing moose in the wild; the serene beauty of Warm Lake, with its trophy mackinaw trout; the museum and historic buildings at Roseberry; and the Finnish Church and cemetery. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
