Preview: This 128-mile loop drive takes you into the very northwest corner of the state into the Cumberland Plateau’s sandstone bluffs and wide valleys. From LaFayette, at the western edge of the Ridge and Valley region, you quickly get sight of Pigeon Mountain, a spur of Lookout Mountain. After rounding the toe of Pigeon Mountain you enter McLemore Cove. From the loop into the cove you climb the eastern escarpment of Lookout Mountain, then continue to Cloudland Canyon State Park. The drive descends the western side of the mountain and goes into the valley, around the north end of Lookout Mountain, and to the edge of Chattanooga. Here you dip into and out of Tennessee very quickly. Back up Lookout Mountain you can visit Rock City Garden, Point Park, and other attractions before going back south on the mountain and into the Chickamauga Valley to close the loop back at LaFayette. Special attractions: Grand views from the valleys and mountains, the unique McLemore Cove with beautiful farms and views, and the Cumberland Plateau’s southern limits, which rise 2,000 feet above the valley floor. Cloudland Canyon State Park, Point Park, and Rock City Gardens are on Lookout Mountain. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
