Preview: An 11-mile Type I byway that follows the scenic Nestucca River Canyon through a lush forest in western Oregon’s Coast Range. The Nestucca River Back Country Byway threads through a scenic river canyon carved by the Nestucca River in western Oregon’s moist Coast Range. The byway offers an unhurried, off-the-beaten-track route between the Willamette Valley and the spectacular Oregon coast. The Type I byway is double-lane and paved, except for 3 miles of improved gravel road. Frequent turnouts provide river access for sightseeing and fishing. The entire length of the route between Carlton and Beaver is 48 miles. Only 11 miles of the route, those on BLM land, have been officially designated as a Back Country Byway. Special Attractions: Giant Douglas firs, salmon and steelhead fishing, inner-tubing, hiking, wading, photography, wildlife observation, camping, picnicking. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
