Preview: Montage opened its slopes in 1984 as a private, nonprofit corporation, run by a volunteer board of directors with hopes of building tourism in the region. Years of overwhelming maintenance costs forced the resort to switch hands in 1991 over to Lackawanna County, the securer of the ski area’s debt. It made more sense at the time for the county to own and operate the resort since it serves as the broker of the region’s tourism trade. The county also owns Lackawanna Stadium and its AAA affiliate Red Barons baseball team. Not much has changed in the last decade at Montage. Aside from the addition of snowtubing, the resort still offers 21 varied runs on a smart trail layout. And while it doesn’t boast the amenities of nearby Pocono areas, it doesn’t get the same crowds either. That’s probably because the resort sits just north of the Pocono Mountain range and is a little more of a haul for those coming from the big cities. Access to the mountain is relatively quick and easy off of Interstate 81. Good all around resort, with good separation of skier levels. Small and easy to get around, few lines on the more advanced area. Verticle is limited, but runs are well laid out and are attractively wooded. Get there early and leave early, before the crowds on week-ends.
