Camelback - Tannersville PA Ski Vacation

Preview: Big Pocono Ski Area opened way back in 1950–51, running sporadically for four years before hurricanes Connie and Diane shut things down. Millions of gallons of water were dumped on the mountain, causing massive runoff and destruction and taking the lives of more than 50 local residents. Skiing was restored a few years later when several Pennsylvania businessmen teamed with expert skier and Austrian Davis Cup tennis player Walter Foeger to design a new trail system here on this Pocono plateau southern ridge. A new name for the resort was declared after old geological maps revealed the mountain as “Camelback,” attributed to its double-hump profile from the south. The resort skirted bankruptcy twice in the early going, but an aggressive new snowmaking system helped it survive here in the Mid-Atlantic’s “Banana Belt.” Camelback is now a major Pocono player, having laid out considerable expense in upgrades over the years. Here’s some of what $25 million over 10 years brings to the mountain: new terrain; increased uphill lift capacity and lighting; improved main lodge and expanded facilities; two impressive terrain parks and a halfpipe; and a separate snowtubing park to top it all off. Camelback is not the steepest of Mid-Atlantic mountains. It is, however, a well-oiled resort with a good variety of beginner and intermediate terrain throughout 33 runs and 800 vertical feet. There’s lots of elbow room on the mountain’s impressive 150-plus skiable acres, and its 13 lifts (including two high-speed quads) work hard to keep you on the trails and not in line. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including driving directions, mountain statistics, trail profiles, extensive lodging & dining information, travel tips, and much more.

Review: Biggest area around, and well run. The hardest in the Poconos to ski all runs in a day. Lines at certain spots get long on holidays, but generally a good, large acreage mountain. Many big-city types because of its location, with "aggressive" more-speed-than-brains teens, sometimes making it a bit nerve racking to ski with the family. Big-resort feel to it, with great brew pub down the street.
