Ballard - Seattle WA Walking Tour

Preview: On this walk, you will cross the locks, travel through Fisherman’s Terminal, and then glimpse the best view of the canal from the top of the Ballard Bridge. The walk connects back to the locks via downtown Ballard, once an independent community that lured a great many immigrants from Scandinavia. Along the way, you may spot ocean-going vessels with names like Torddenskjold and Courageous, a yacht named C’Toy, or fishing boats named Tuition and Miss Conception. You might even glimpse the Never Again II. The part of the canal that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year includes two navigation locks, a fish ladder, a botanical garden, a visitor center and bookstore, and a spillway dam. Sixty employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulate boat traffic. The locks are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In an average year, 80,000 boats, barges, and log rafts pass between salt and fresh water. Special attractions: Views of yachts and working boats passing through locks between fresh water and Puget Sound; salmon and steelhead ladders and viewing rooms; Fisherman’s Terminal; and downtown Ballard, Seattle’s Scandinavian community.
