Preview: Sardine Lake and Salmon Creek Campgrounds are close to the prettiest little stream and lakes in the Sierra Nevada. You don’t need another reason to come camp here. Wonderful Salmon Creek trills past the Salmon Creek Campground, and Sardine Lake Campground is a mile away, just below the Sardine Lakes. Never mind that the Gold Lakes area is still pristine, with excellent fishing and hiking, fabulously beautiful scenery, and even a golf course. Come for the creek and the little lakes. Scooped out of the flank of Sierra Buttes (elevation: 8,587 feet), Lower and Upper Sardine Lakes are classic glacier tarns caused by the carving and scouring action of a glacier as it passed over bedrock. The low spots became filled with water and became—tarns. How beautiful! The Sardine Lakes are blue and clear and mirror the snow and rocks in the Sierra Buttes above.
