Preview: This pretty campground is perfect for families. Just off Highway 101, Elk Prairie Campground has all the amenities—flush toilets, hot showers, secluded campsites set off in redwoods and maples, and a meadow full of huge, children-pleasing wapiti, otherwise known as elk. These huge animals, Cervus elaphus (or Roosevelt elk in honor of Teddy, the president who helped protect them), are instant crowd pleasers. Cars come to screeching halts on Highway 101 when elk appear beside the road. Kids are fascinated by their huge antlers. The baby elk melt anyone’s heart. The trails are many and easy—no poison oak! A few miles away (by car or foot) is the most beautiful, most secluded sandy
beach in all of California. Orick, a few miles to the south, has all the redwood burls the world could ever desire, groceries, and German brunches at Rolf’s Park Cafe—a German schnitzel house featuring elk steak.
