Preview: Step back in time as you pan for gold in this area. These days, the prime search for gold, in the sister cities of Black Hawk and Central City, takes place at the slot machines. Gambling, including blackjack, is a highlight of a visit here, but history buffs may want to spend time walking the towns that once formed the population center of the state. The restored buildings in both communities stand as testament to the riches once found here. They drip with opulence and ornamentation. Graveyards west of town tell the story of the hard lives lived and lost as prospectors scraped the earth for the precious metal. Serving as either the sheriff or the preacher must have seemed like a lost cause as men fought over the gold. Besides the gambling, other area activities include hiking, fishing, four-wheel driving, and even opera. Camping accommodations are varied. Golden Gate State Park has some of the best tent camping in the state, but trailer campers will probably be most interested in the national forest camps. Campgrounds included in this chapter are: Golden Gate State Park (Aspen Meadow, Reverend's Ridge), Camp Dick, Cold Springs, Columbine, Kelly Dahl, Pawnee, Peaceful Valley, Rainbow Lakes.
