Preview: Bunker Hills Regional Park lies just beyond the last of the suburbs of the metropolitan Twin Cities, north side (including the Anoka area), and the ever-expanding open country to the north. Bunker Hills is a pocket of sandy hills, oak forests, and a small lake that has been developed into one of the major regional parks in Anoka County. This park is probably more renowned for its incredible water park that draws swimmers, waders, and splashers from all around the seven-county metro area. I doubt many people even realize it has a campground—and a choice one at that! Like the campsite listed for Cleary Lake, Bunker Lake campground is in a regional park and as such is part of a complex of recreational activities that also includes a golf course and a water park. Hiking trails wind through the campground and wooded areas; riding stables are located within the park, and the local lake offers boating and fishing. The programs and amenities are all designed for and openly encourage full family participation and enjoyment. There is a wonderful walking/biking trail that works its way through the Bunker Hill complex. It curves through the oaks and up and over swales along its wooded course. The total trail is about 5 miles long and at several points intersects with spurs that offer shortcuts back to the campgrounds or to some of the key recreational sections of the park (the water park, for example). Bird-watchers will be kept busy with all the park’s songbirds. Activities: hiking, swimming and water park, horseback riding, golf, and picnic area.
