The Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area is located at the northern end of the 50-mile Massanutten Mountain, whose eastern and western ridges surround Fort Valley like the eye of a needle. You'll find your access to this campground to be restricted after times of heavy rain when the creek overflows its banks. However, under average conditions, it provides a nice backdrop to this quiet campground with waters that are stocked with trout for fishermen. Those looking for longer and more strenuous hikes can cross the road and climb on one or more of the area's well-blazed trails to the Buzzard Rock Overlook, Fort Valley Overlook, or Signal Knob. Mountain biking is also a possibility on these trails, but riders should be prepared to yield the right-of-way to hikers who frequent the area, especially on weekends.
