Prince Edward Island, Canada
|
Even for most Canadians, the maritime provinces and eastern outer islands redefine "Remote location." But Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, has long been popular with vacationers even from the northern United States, many of whom choose to stay in the tidy and picturesque capital city of Charlottetown. Cruise ships, such as the stately Queen Mary 2, make stops in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but they do not call on the charming and history-soaked region of Cape Breton Island. Here, as in much of the maritime lands of Canada, Celtic and Gaelic traditions still flourish in these rugged outposts of the North Atlantic which are truly off the beaten path. In PEI, Nova Scotia, and neighboring New Brunswick, it's not hard to find a healthy combination of such modern island getaway activities as kayaking, fishing, canoeing, and hiking unspoiled pathways in places that can seem like slices out of the distant past.
